About The Artist
Michele Soncini received her M.S. in Criminology from the Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, AZ where she studied the effects of art on the construction of identity of incarcerated juveniles and adults. As an undergraduate, Michele studied Forensic Anthropology and Fine Arts with a focus in Drawing/Printmaking at Arizona State University and The University of South Carolina. She studied 2D/3D Forensic Facial Reconstruction at the Scottsdale Artists School and consulted on cases in both the United States and Canada.
Michele Soncini attended a Mosaic Workshop at the Perkins Center For The Arts in Collingswood, NJ in an attempt to explore and implement color into her prints. It was there that she came to work under the tutelage of Mosaic Artist, Jackie Stack Lagakos, a disciple of international mosaic artist, Isaiah Zagar.
Throughout her art career, Michele Soncini has been simultaneously employed in various aspects of the Criminal Justice System. Her artistic images are largely influenced by her experiences in working with inmates, conducting child abuse investigations, and as a crisis worker for children and adults through various government Agencies.
About Her Work
In my work I explore the human figure and its connection to the world around it. I tend to focus on the nude, to emphasize its vulnerability, and how it exists as the vehicle through which humans experience life.
I am fascinated by how the human body becomes a roadmap of one's life experiences, both good and traumatic, and creates an individualized human taphonomy which can be seen in every scar, blemish, and demarcation of the human body.
The mediums with which I create my images are largely tactile in nature and deeply rooted in drawing. There is an honesty and energy that I derive when making a drypoint or mezzotint or constructing an ink drawing. This is also true when I am breaking and cutting glass to reassemble as a mosaic painting.
